How to make Easy Bird Seed Blocks | suet cakes | Fat Balls

As winter is approaching, our little garden birds will be in need of some extra sustenance to see them through the colder months.

It is such a fun and simple activity to do for adults and children with only 2 ingredients - bird seed and fat. You can make these quick and inexpensive blocks to pop into your feeders or shape into balls.

Recipe

1kg (1000g) of seeds & grubs of your choice

(Use what you have available)

I used

500g of wildbird mix

200g sunflower hearts

200g Nyjer Seed

100g Meal Worms

500g of Fat (you can use lard, suet, dripping, etc)

Method

1. Measure out your seed and grub mix & fat.

Put your fat in a separate bowl.

2. Place your fat into a pan or microwavable dish and melt until liquid.

Allow to cool slightly.

3. Get your tin etc ready I lined mine with greaseproof paper.

4. Mix fat and seeds together until fully mixed and place into your tin or in a baking sheet .

5. Press down with the back of your spatular to compact it and leave it to cool & then cut and place in the feeder.

🐦 Any extras place into an airtight container and let the birds enjoy.

Tips - You can also roll them into fat balls, or squash the mix into pine cones and string them up outside, or place some string through an empty yogurt pot, fill the pot with the seed & fat mix and demold and hand outside when cool.
